Q. What is ec3wd?
A. A new (March 2009) online system which gives free advertising and free advert-searching to anyone and everyone anywhere in the world.

Q. What does the acronym ec3wd mean?
A. E-Commerce Third World the intention is that ec3wd will bring to the third world an Engine for Development. But this is hard-headed stuff not your typical soft-headed ineffective NGO meanderings. And since more and more of developed countries now resemble the Third World, with increasing poverty for the many alongside increasing and obscene wealth for the few, then ec3wd extends a hand to any and every global citizen rich and poor, developed and less-developed-country dwellers - Buddhist, Islamic, Christian, Judaic, Agnostic, Atheist, Heathen, Animist and beyond.
Q. Are there any country limitations?
A. None
Q. How does ec3wd work?
A. It enables people to upload files or documents to its website, and then other people can search and view or download these files and documents, and can contact directly the person who uploaded so that they can do business together.
A. Additionally and alternatively, people can directly type an advert into a screen on the website.
A. Thirdly, people can send an sms/text message to the mobile number +91 984 835 67 65 with ec3wd followed by a space at the start of the message. By using the convention days_69 the advert will remain on the system for 69 days, days_2 will remain only 2 days, days_365 is the maximum allowed. If you dont specify any days then the system keeps your sms message for 364 days. By using the convention cat_HR/comp_profile/2_5/ anywhere in the message then that category HR/comp_profile/2_5/ is used to store the advert on the system. But every message is also stored under the address http://www.ec3wd.com/FileData/SMS/ regardless of whether there is any cat_specified or not. When the message is found by a searcher it also displays the mobile number the message was sent from and the country from which the mobile number originates (the mobile can of course be on roaming). Note that we do not respond to any incoming sms advert (this is for cost reasons) you will only find out if your advert reached us and was processed by doing a search a few days after submission. This search can be done on PC or on internet-capable mobile phone. The system automatically adds a geographic tag to the message to indicate the country of origin of the mobile from which the sms originated this should help searchers where the advert is country-specific. Sorry there is and will be no facility to search on this version of ec3wd using sms/text message... The mobile number +91 984 835 67 65 is an Indian number therefore unless you are in India it will cost you the price of an international sms to submit an advert.
A. Summarising the above there are 3 options for submitting an advert upload a file, direct text entry through web screen, and direct advert submission by sms message. There is one way to search using an internet-connected PC or an internet-capable mobile phone or smart phone.
Q. Can I submit files in languages other than English?
A. Yes! Ec3wd welcomes documents in Arabic, Chinese, Tagalog, Bahasa, Japanese, Korean, Urdu, Russian, Danish, Thai, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Hindu, Zulu, Swahili, Peul (Fulani) and a myriad of other languages. Google is searchable on so many languages whatever Google can search on you might as well upload.... But of course if your intention is transnational then you should also if possible upload an English version of your document. Chinese, Arabic, and Spanish are also of course major World Languages, with French, Russian and Portuguese also in the running upload what you want and what generates business for you.
Q. How much does ec3wd cost?
A. There is no charge to uploaders and no charge to searchers. People submitting adverts by sms/text obviously pay the normal charge for an international sms (national sms if sending from inside India). This is often 2x a national/domestic sms and should be as low as US$ 0.04 but in practice can be as high as US$0.40, depending on country and operator.
Q. How is ec3wd funded?
A. Through advertising on the ec3wd website. If you click on an advert on the ec3wd website and then click again to go to a vendors website, then ec3wd get a very small payment for that second click. This is enough to cover our costs.
Q. What kind of files can be uploaded?
A. Word documents (.doc and .docx), spreadsheets (.xls and .xlsx), .pdf files, .htm and .html webpages, text files (.txt), powerpoint presentations (.ppt and .pptx) and .xml files. The system also accepts .csv (comma-separated format) files if they are structured in a certain way, but it splits them into a number of smaller .htm files for storage and search.
Q. Can photos, movies, and audio/music tracks be uploaded and downloaded?
A. No there are other (legal and illegal) sites which cover that kind of thing.
Q. Is there a size limit to each file?
A. Yes at the moment it is 500k (500,000 bytes) that maybe revised upwards or downwards as time passes. There is no lower limit to filesize. If the file is small then it will load more quickly under low bandwidth conditions this will enable it to be viewed more easily and will be more attractive to searchers. Sometimes an uploader will want to submit a small and also a large version of their content... The small version can even have a link to the large version upload the large version first get the link, add the link to the small version and then upload it.
Q. Can the adverts include photos yes by using word doc or .docx or pdf file then jpg, gif etc photos, images and diagrams can be incorporated. But htm and html files with separate gif and jpg files cannot take those dependent graphic files with them during the upload therefore if you want photos, diagrams or other images dont use htm or html in ec3wd.
Q. I find the business of deciding which folder to upload to very time-consuming and confusing. Is there any way of avoiding this when uploading and/or searching?
A. Yes just choose the Other* folder which is almost at the top of the tree view. This strategy is OK when the system is almost empty, but you will get better results by working out which folder(s) you really want to search and/or upload to, especially when the system gets busy. For searching, you can even choose the ec3wd folder which is right at the top of the tree view then the system will search the complete ec3wd website all folders and sub-folders.
Q. What sectors of the economy does it cover?
A. Almost every sector. We do not at this point in time do dating services, but just about everything else is possible on ec3wd. There is a large buy-and-sell area (similar to classified adverts). There is a Human Relations area (HR) which encompasses resumes/cvs, company profiles etc. There is an area for Job advertisements. There is a Projects area which includes investment wanted and offered, grants, loans, microfinance, volunteering, technical advice etc.. There is a tourism area, with a lot of sub-categories. There is an area for events, one for software and content downloads, one for educational materials and content, one for electronic books (e-books), and one for cloudware (online systems for doing accounting, word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, microfinance and all other kinds of useful things). Some of these categories are very exciting educational materials and e-books can both be used for example by teachers and lecturers to upload course material they have written, which can then be accessed by a global audience. And there is no language restriction!... The downloads section will only usually contain a link to the download itself, which will be on some other website this is because of 2 reasons the filesize upper limit on ec3wd and the filetype limitation also... But educational materials and e-books will often fit in under the 500k bytes limitation, even if they have to be split into chapters therefore the actual content can be stored on ec3wd and downloaded from ec3wd.
Q. Can I do a local search in my small town or rural area?
A. Yes there are geographic features which enable global searches or very localised searches and everything in between.
Q. Is ec3wd an alternative to having a webpage?
A. In some ways yes but ec3wd concentrates the content in defined areas and makes searching a very targeted and rewarding experience even more so than a normal Google search. Note that you can use ec3wd as a complement or addition to having a website you can have a small or large entry in ec3wd which points to your website. For small outfits and self-employed people facing relatively high charges for a website, then ec3wd can be a good alternative. Even tree-fellers, bee-removal experts, shoe-repairers, open-air barbers, open-air welders, informal sector vendors, handicrafts workers and sellers etc can be on ec3wd.... And you can put your ec3wd website address on your business cards or paper flyers...
Q. Is ec3wd an alternative to Alibaba, Kompass Company directory, CraigsList and sites like those?
A. In some ways yes, and yet ec3wd is so much more, and it is so flexible. Also ec3wds cost structure (zero) is a very strong attraction. Ec3wd is a companies and products database, a tenders database, an investment marketplace, a CV/resume databank, a job adverts database and so much more it swallows up and surpasses Kompass, Ali Baba, Craigs List, Monster, Jobserve, Tradepoint, and many many more existing online systems. The power of ec3wd cannot be underestimated. Ec3wd just needs a critical mass of activity and then the sky is the limit.
Q. How can I help ec3wd to get going?
A. Upload your CV/resume. If you are a freelancer or run a company, then upload a company profile. If you handle job adverts then advertise in your normal media but also in ec3wd. If you are putting any classified advert anywhere then also put it in ec3wd. Etc..
Q. Is ec3wd meant to be predominantly a Business-to-Business (B2B), Consumer-to-Consumer (C2C) or Business-to-Consumer (B2C) site?
A. All three of these ec3wd is a fluid and flexible system which will be driven by the market it is potentially strong in all 3 areas.
Q. How do I know how much content there is inside ec3wd to search on?
A. There is extensive logging and reporting in ec3wd, and most of the reports are freely available to all users. If you select a category for which there is no content then ec3wd will tell you before you try to search; and ec3wd will also tell you how many entries there are for your own country (in the event that your search is a national one).
Q. How is searching done?
A. ec3wd uses Google to search. But that search is limited to subdirectories inside ec3wd itself this makes the search very targeted and highly effective. Of course you can also rerun that same search querying the entire web.
Q. Can I search on price?
A. Yes that is an integral part of ec3wd you can search on price range by using our menus.
Q. Apart from keywords and sector/category and price what can I search on?
A. You can search only very recently-indexed content for example if you last searched 7 days ago this feature can be used to pick out only new material indexed since then.
A. You can search on a date in the document. E.g. for future events you can search on conferences, exhibitions, movies, concerts etc taking place in Nairobi on a certain week.
Q. Can I search or upload using a mobile device?
A. Yes - the ec3wd screens are kept simple and un-cluttered, and the kb load is kept small so that performance and display on mobile devices is optimised. There are 3 menus also where there is a normal and a mobile option the mobile option suppresses display of a calendar control for expiry date selection, so as to minimise page load and screen clutter.
Q. How long does my content remain on ec3wd?
A. When you upload a file you specify how long it is to remain on ec3wd the minimum is currently 1 day, the maximum is currently 365 days, and the default period is currently 90 days. You can renew or change the expiry date at any time using the file number and the 5-digit password, both of which you are issued at the time of uploading. If you lose or misplace that password then the file remains on ec3wd until the expiry date, when it is automatically deleted by the system. You can also manually delete the file at any point in time, again using the same password. You also upload and overwrite a later version of the same file using another menu option. This ensures immediate Google searchability on the newly-uploaded file. If you try the wrong password more than 40* (the current default value which we may alter) times then the file is locked in place until the expiry date. We have no provision for informing you of any forgotten or lost password, so please store that info safely....
Q. How can I avoid the pain of losing my password and filenumber (and even a copy of my uploaded file)?
A. If you use a web-based email system (like Gmail for example) then compose an email, shade, copy and paste the file upload info into that email, and then save it as a draft. It will stay there until you need it again for a manual deletion, to change the expiry date, or to upload and overwrite with a later version of your file. You can also save the file you uploaded as an attachment on a draft email so that you dont lose it.
Q. Do I have to register to be a searcher or an uploader?
A. No.
Q. Does ec3wd contact me by email?
A. No never.
Q. Not even to remind me to renew my entry?
A. Sorry no there are web-based free reminder services use one of them if you need a reminder www.memotome.com and www.freminder.com are 2 possibilities.
Q. How will you combat cyber-vandalism on ec3wd?
A. We log and store the IP address and the date and time of uploading for every file uploaded. This information is available to everyone. Security agents can determine the location of the pc and/or the owner of the mobile device, and can pursue anyone breaching national laws. Also there are some special (passive) menus which will be available to bona-fide national and international police if and when they request access.
A. Additionally we can easily bar any IP address or IP Address range (or even an entire country) from uploading files to ec3wd.
A. There is also a special reporting feature on ec3wd where general users can report a file in ec3wd which the user found to be a scam, pornographic or otherwise suspect ( but note that there is no automatic action taken as a result of any such reporting, since in some cases the reporting could be malicious).
Q. What terms and conditions apply to users of ec3wd?
A. ec3wd reserve the right to remove any content at any time from ec3wd without informing the uploader or giving any reason. Ec3wd reserve the right to bar any IP address, any IP Address range, and/or any country from uploading to ec3wd at any time without informing the uploader or giving any reason. Ec3wd also reserves the right to automatically delete any and all existing files which were already uploaded from any of these barred IP Addresses or countries. (see Terms and Conditions at the End of this Document)
Q. If a user wants to make suggestion as to additional categories he or she would like to be added how is that done?
A. There is a special menu item for this Suggest Category.
Q. Is there any other feedback mechanism?
A. There is a guestbook, which is the primary feedback mechanism. Or you can also use the Suggest Category menu option to send us a (very) short message (30 characters maximum).
Q. Is there anything very special about ec3wd?
A. Everything about ec3wd is special but yes the resume/cv feature is particularly attractive most global websites which encourage you to upload your resume then hide it away and sell it to paying customers. Ec3wd makes your resume open to the world (like having your resume on your website or someone elses website but in a very targeted, searchable and findable fashion). This makes ec3wd a zero cost resource for companies, and also allows people to easily find and contact others working in the same field or in complementary fields i.e. it can greatly stimulate collaboration. We fully expect that a lot of the initial activity on ec3wd will be in the area of resumes. Note that we encourage uploaders, particularly women, not to include physical address or phone numbers in their resumes only give an email address this can even be a gmail address which gives you free redirection into your normal email address (which in turn can be a gmail address or from any other mail provider). If you give a phone number make it a mobile number which you dont mind closing down in the event of harassment.
Q. Will ec3wd be used by scammers as well as by legitimate traders and individuals?
A. Unfortunately those kind of people get everywhere. 419ers and the like exploit every opportunity and every loophole. It is a (relatively) free society. We will try to minimise scam activity on ec3wd but will be unable to eliminate it. Caveat emptor! buyer beware!
Q. How do geographic searches work on ec3wd?
A. They depend on the uploader entering geographic keywords into the document before uploading the convention which we recommend is to use g_southafrica, g_joburg, g_lilongwe, g_kenya, g_nairobi, g_westlands, g_comesa, g_eac, g_sadcc, g_ecowas, g_nafta, g_mercosur, g_au, g_eu, g_uk, g_england, g_yorkshire, g_leeds, g_pudsey etc . Note that you can/should use several of these geographic keywords so that your document can be picked up by suburb, city, country, region, continent etc.. The g_ in this ec3wd convention indicates a geographic tag... The geographic keywords for countries are listed in one of the publicly-available reports RCC (as the field Geographic_Tag); for cities try to use the English city name (if one exists). If there are 2 options then use them both in your document and use one only in your search. If the city name has gaps or hyphens then concatenate e.g. g_DarEsSaalaam. Note that lower/upper case doesnt matter.
Q. How should the document be best structured?
A. The title is important as is the start of the document, since Google picks those things up in a search and in the initial display of 10 matches. State clearly in the title what the document is about thus enabling the searcher to decide whether to click on your document or on someone elses. And a small document (which is therefore fast to load) which links to a larger document will be more attractive to many low-bandwidth searchers. We also recommend that the expiry date for a job advert is put clearly at the start of the title. Use a non-ambiguous date format (e.g. expires 30 Nov 2009 or expires 2009.11.30) if possible not a format which is confusing to US and/or non-US searchers.
Q. What about parts lists and stock lists? Doing price searches on those in Google is often useless since there are so many different prices in one document.
A. Understood - if you submit a parts list or stock list as a comma-separated-file (.csv) with a $ sign in front of the price on each line (even if the prices are in some other currency please use this convention throughout ec3wd because Google is very $-friendly), then ec3wd will split the .csv file into a number of files, 1 per line, and stores them ready for searching. Then a price range search is completely and 100% effective. Ec3wd will process a .csv file with up to 3000* line items into 3000* separate htm files ready to be searched on (this number may vary with time you will be informed at time of upload or upload/overwrite). You should have a small header (up to 255 characters are processed) for the .csv file just a few lines giving company or vendor name and contact info, and maybe which currency the prices are actually in (but dont use the $ sign in the header please it will confuse the automatic processing). Your original file is reprocessed to an htm file as 1.htm, and the split files range from 2.htm onwards (i.e. 2.htm through 2002.htm if there are 2000 data lines in the original .csv file). Google will find these dont worry.
Q. What scale do you expect ec3wd to operate on?
A. We start March 2009 and hope for 1 million files uploaded and 100,000 webpage views per day by the end of June 2009. The Google indexed search limit for one website is by any accounts 50 million documents we would like to breach that limit at which point we split ec3wd into more than one virtual website. The software for the site is relatively simple, but it is designed and written to be a heavy duty industrial quality system which will not fall over if and when the traffic gets serious. And if we dont reach one million by June 2009, dont worry we are patient, and we have faith in our concept and in our business model.
Q. What other systems do the ec3wd owners operate?
A. cd3wd - http://www.cd3wd.com/cd3wd_40/cd3wd/index.htm - a project which has been active since 2003 providing free high-quality online and offline technical development information for the Third World which gets 4,000 webpage views per day and 23 Gigabytes of downloads per day.
Q. Who are the people behind ec3wd?
A. ec3wd is a one-man band Alex Weir http://www.cd3wd.com/resume/index.htm Alex is a Scotsman now based in Zimbabwe in Africa and has worked as an Engineer, Management Consultant, and Software Developer in 19 countries in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and beyond.
Q. What is his motivation?
A. Alex is a one-man NGO he runs projects which try to improve conditions in the Third World. And he funds his activities with his own earnings from commercial software development contract work (since the Donors and NGOs either ignore him or are actively hostile to his projects). He judges ec3wd to be a project which will not only be self-financing, it will also generate revenue with which he can fund other less-commercial projects which he has in mind (e.g. his medical expert system for the Third World http://www.cd3wd.com/MedExpSys/index.htm ).
Q. What about non-windows users?
A. There are Linux, Unix and Apple Mac word processors which enable users to create .doc and .docx files. Also htm, html and pdf files are a good alternative. And there are online free services which enable you to create word .doc and .docx files, xls, xlsx, pdf etc etc.. Fortunately Google usually offers an htm version of any and every .doc and .docx file when searching. We dont see any problem for Linux, Unix and Mac users to fully participate in ec3wd.
Q. Are there any negatives regarding ec3wd?
A. The time for Google to get around to indexing our (your) files is a concern to us. We have a system which regularly creates and re-creates Google sitemap and sitemap indexfiles, which makes it easier for Google to keep up-to-date with our (your) content. We would like after some time in operation to be treated by Google like a news website, which Google trawls almost continuously. But at the start, there may be some disappointment with uploaded files which take some time to get indexed. Be patient good service will come! This may be particularly critical for job advertisements therefore we recommend job advertisers to submit as early as possible even before approval has been granted stating clearly that the job advert is provisional when approval comes through it can be overwritten (using the upload & overwrite menu option) by a normal advert for the same job requesting that applicants start to apply. If approval is not granted then the advert can be deleted by the uploader. The provisional advert does not need to identify the company and does not need to include any contact information of any kind!...
A. Although there is a lot of structure to ec3wd, there are undoubtedly some categories which should be there which we have missed. Note that categories we have missed can easily be added by us without any reprogramming of the system we will probably do that kind of exercise once every month over the first few months of operation. Use the Suggest Category menu option...
A. The country/geographic coding is important for any and all geographic searches there is a geographic country coding list on one of the standard publicly-available reports on ec3wd... If uploaders use that convention all will be well, if not then they may be disappointed and get far fewer contacts and responses than they had hoped for.
Q. Can ec3wd help the unemployed?
A. Of course! ec3wd can help you find full-time, part-time, contract and occasional work to match your skills and experience. By cutting out middle-men and agencies it can make you more affordable. It can also help middle-men and agencies to be more efficient and effective with a lower cost base...
Q. So is ec3wd only for the Third World and only for Small Business?
A. By no means anyone who ignores the power of ec3wd is missing out on something very productive and very profitable.

Q. How do ec3wd.com inform users about new features and changes?
A. By using the Announcement Screen http://www.ec3wd.com/Announce.htm - usually this will be empty...
A runthrough of the menus and how they operate:
Search choose from the category tree which category you wish to search on. You can choose from the highest to the lowest level. Because the tree is too big to display on one page, there are categories marked .... which lead to another sub-tree if clicked on. You can then re-click on the same category to get to the actual search page.
The search screen has 5 checkboxes 24 hours, 2 days, 4 days, 7 days, 14 days check one of these to indicate that you want to restrict the search to recently-indexed content. Probably you wont use this option very often.
Date1 and Date2 allow you to enter (in USA Date Format e.g. 11/30/2009) a start and an end date for your search which will only find documents with a date between those 2 inside the document. Can be used for events, exhibitions, conferences etc.. Probably you wont use this option very often.
Price1 and Price2 enter in whole numbers or in decimals the lower (Price1) and upper (Price2) price range within which you want to search e.g. 200 or 20 or 2.20 or 0.67 . Do not enter EUR, CHF, CNY, GBP, $ or other currency designators. Probably you will use this option quite often.
Input search string here you will input what you normally input in a Google search as an example - Nokia n70 g_nairobi (g_westlands OR g_citycentre). Note that we have already put into the search box the ec3wd-recommended geographic tag for your country just delete this if you dont want to restrict your search in this way...
Choose how many results per page you want returned maybe to choose 100 is the best, even if there are only 4 matches in practice...
Press the search button and you will be redirected to the search results on a Google search page. There are also dynamic Google adverts there. Clicking on those adverts and then further clicking to go to advertisers websites generates income for ec3wd. But dont just do it for the hell of it it will give ec3wd a bad reputation. There are also relatively static Google adverts on the various ec3wd menus, where clicking and then second-clicking also generates income for ec3wd.
Press the back button if necessary to return to ec3wd after the search is over.
Upload - choose from the category tree which category you wish to search on. You can choose from the highest to the lowest level. Because the tree is too big to display on one page, there are categories marked .... which lead to another sub-tree if clicked on. You have to click on a category marked with an asterisk * in order to upload...
Days to be Stored the current maximum is 365 days and the minimum 1 day. The default is 90 days. Below that box there is a calendar, which you can use to override the days value. This is useful for job adverts where you dont want the job to be advertised after the closing date, and you cannot be bothered to work out the number of days to the closing date. Click on a date and that will be converted to Number of days to be stored. Click > or < to move to next or previous month.
Click the browse button to choose the file to be uploaded this can be on a flash ram or on the computer hard drive. Note the size limitations (maximum 500k) and the filetype limitations (htm, html, pdf, txt, doc, docx, xls,xlsx, ppt and as a special case the .csv file which the system will split into a number of small htm files).
Press Upload File and wait for the system to respond. It will give you file address, file number, password, expiry date and some other info. The file address is like an internet web address for your file anyone can find it there you can even put it on your business cards.
Upload (mob) this is the same as upload, but does not include the calendar for expiry date selection
Change Date The file ID Number is the file number which you were issued at the time of upload. Days to be stored ands calendar are as per the Upload menu option. Password is the 5-digit password you were issued at the time of file upload. Press the Change Date button to change the expiry date.

Delete a File - The file ID Number is the file number which you were issued at the time of upload. Alternatively input the full web address of the file to be deleted in the long text entry box. Password is the 5-digit password you were issued at the time of file upload. Press the Delete button to delete the file.
Upload and Overwrite - The file ID Number is the file number which you were issued at the time of upload. Alternatively input the full web address of the file to be overwritten in the long text entry box. Select days to be stored from today onwards by the text input box or by selecting an expiry date from the calendar control. Press the browse button to select the new file to be uploaded. Password is the 5-digit password you were issued at the time of file upload. Press the Upload and Overwrite button to upload and overwrite the file.
U & O (mob) upload and overwrite but without the calendar control. To ensure faster operation for mobile or for low bandwidth conditions.
View IP Address - The file ID Number is the file number which you were issued at the time of upload. Alternatively input the full web address (e.g. http://www.ec3wd.com/FileData/xxx/xxx/xxx.docx) of the file to be detailed in the long text entry box. Press the View IP Button to get info on that file. If you enter 999999999 or any large number into the ID Number box then the system will find for you the latest file to be uploaded i.e. there is a fuzzy search facility.
Report Problem the screen is self-explanatory. There is no multiple choice problem definition available at the moment, but usually the problem would be pornography or a scam scheme.
Suggest Category - the screen is self-explanatory the limit is 30 characters in length
SecCountry a report by sector(category) and country select a category and the system shows number of files for every country which has uploaded files for that category
